Hydrometeorological Research and Forecasting, no. 4 (378)
"Proceedings of the Hydrometcenter of Russia"

Edited by A.A. Vasiliev, Doctor of Geographical Sciences

The papers in the journal contain the results research on improving short- and very-short-range weather forecasts, including weather hazard forecasts. It is shown that the assimilation of radar and ground observation data contributes to the improvement of numerical forecasts of the zones of heavy precipitation, squalls and thunderstorms. Possible causes of systematic errors in forecasts are analyzed. It is established that the use of the one-dimensional Kalman filter for statistical correction of outputs of numerical forecasts of surface air temperature by two numerical models gives positive results. An automated technology for diagnosing cloud cover properties, precipitation, and weather hazards in the European part of Russia based on radiometric observations from Meteosat (MSG) geostationary weather satellites is presented. The results of studying some aviation weather hazards, in particular, low visibility and dust storms are discussed. The EFAS warnings for the rivers in northwestern Russia are verified. The features of the distribution of the long-term temperature regime on the territory of Azerbaijan are analyzed. The Information section contains articles summarizing the contribution of scientists from Hydrometeorological Center of Russia to the WMO activities.
